DIY upholstery cleaning

Upholstery cleaning is expensive. A professional sofa cleaning costs about $100, while chairs can cost about $50 each — additional fees may be charged for each cushion. Given that all upholstered furniture should be cleaned every 12 months, it can get pricey to keep your upholstered pieces fresh and free of stains.

You might want to consider cleaning upholstery yourself. It’s not difficult, and most upholstery can be safely cleaned at home. Check your upholstery tags for cleaning codes. They are usually found under the seat cushions on one side of the furniture.

Upholstery tags that read “W” or “WS” can be cleaned at home with a water-based cleaner. Upholstery tags labeled “S” must be cleaned with a water-free dry cleaning solution. Because dry cleaning solvents contain toxic chemicals, it’s best to have “S” rated upholstery cleaned professionally. Upholstery labeled “X” should also be cleaned by a professional.

It’s not a good idea to wait too long between upholstery cleanings. The more dirt that accumulates on the fabric, the harder it is to remove, the more damage it does to the texture, and the more difficult it is to restore upholstery to its original color and appearance.

Before cleaning upholstery

Being careful to clean uphostery properly is a critical element to execute a job well-done. Follow these steps to ensure success before tidying up your furniture:

1. Remove furniture cushions2. Vacuum all surfaces thoroughly with an upholstery attachment3. Be sure to vacuum all the nooks and cranniesOne of the best water based upholstery cleaners is very easy to make at home. Put one cup of warm (not hot) water into a mixing bowl and then add 1/4 cup of biodegradable dish washing soap. Beat with an electric mixer at medium speed until the liquid becomes a thick foam. This foam will remove built up dirt and most food or drink stains. Not only is this cleaner simple to make and cheap to use, it’s also nontoxic and environmentally-friendly. Most commercial upholstery cleaners contain hazardous ingredients like acetone or carcinogenic agents like nitrilotriacetic acid.

The cleaning process

Once your ready to take on cleaning, implement this process to keep your task on track:

1. Test the cleaner in an inconspicuous area for shrinkage and colorfastness2. Use a soft-bristled brush to rub foam gently onto the fabric3. Dirt will lift out of the upholstery fabric and into the foam4. Remove used foam with a spatula5. Dampen a clean white cloth with fresh water and wipe away the remaining suds6. Rinse the cloth and wipe againTake care to use a minimal amount of water. Too much moisture can leave water stains and cause fabric shrinkage. Keep the foam away from wood surfaces such as armrests and steer clear of recliner levers to prevent rust. This process can be used on individual stains or on an entire upholstered surface. If you clean the entire surface, be sure to let it dry completely before replacing the cushions and pillows or sitting on it.

Leather upholstery is even easier to clean because you don’t have to wait for it to dry. Make your own leather cleaner by adding a few drops of moisturizing soap to a slightly damp washcloth. Gently wipe off a section of the leather upholstery, use another slightly damp washcloth to remove the soap, then buff with a dry washcloth. Repeat this process over the entire upholstered area.In between cleanings, vacuum upholstery thoroughly every two weeks and treat stains immediately. If spills are wet, blot the moisture first with paper towels and then spot-treat with a cleaner. If the spill involves solids such as food, scoop it off with a spatula and then treat with a stain-remover. Avoid rubbing staining agents into the upholstery. The water-based cleaner suggested above will lift stains out instead.

Why hire?

The chief reason you would hire a professional upholstery cleaner is that there are many stains you can’t remove yourself. Most furniture is upholstered with specific fabrics that do not respond well to normal cleaning methods. Special chemicals are needed to clean this upholstery, chemicals that most homeowners do not possess. Professional upholstery cleaners have expertise in using these chemicals to clean all kinds of furniture.Furthermore, the unique shapes of upholstered furniture call for special tools to clean all the nooks and crannies found on most furniture. It’s not cost effective for most homeowners to buy these tools. It is far more efficient to hire a professional upholstery cleaner instead.Cleaning companies will come to your home and clean the furniture wherever it is located. In rare circumstances, a professional upholstery cleaner may have to take your furniture to another location for a special cleaning. This will only happen in the case that the furniture is particularly soiled or when it is made from an extremely unusual fabric. Most of the chemicals that professional upholstery cleaners use are similar to the chemicals used in the dry cleaning of clothes. As a rule, these chemicals are generally safe for people and animals once they have dried. At the same time, however, they can cause respiratory issues, so it is important for upholstery cleaning to always take place in a well-ventilated area. The most dangerous upholstery cleaning chemicals are those chemicals that contain volatile organic compounds. These chemicals are still safe once they have dried, but they can lead to respiratory problems if they are inhaled. To prevent these difficulties, make sure to ventilate well the room in which the furniture is cleaned. Those who are particularly concerned about these chemicals can hire a professional upholstery cleaner that uses chemicals with low levels of volatile organic compounds. There are also many professional upholstery cleaners that use green chemicals, which are chemicals that are not harmful to people, animals or the natural environment.

Upholstery Cleaning Newport Beach

Residents of Newport Beach, California! For any carpet and upholstery cleaning related task, you are welcome to contact Upholstery Cleaning Orange County.

For most people, buying upholstery is a time consuming process that entails making a string of decisions concerning issues such as color, fabric, and style. In addition, budgetary considerations also come into play. It makes sense that once a decision has been made, you want it to be the right one, and you want to keep the furniture in use as long as possible. The best way to ensure that your upholstered pieces service you for as long as possible is to take proper care of them. This means weekly brushing and vacuuming and deep cleaning once every two to three years.

Deep Cleaning

Deep cleaning upholstery is an essential element in upholstery care. For best results, upholstery should be deep cleaned at regular intervals, yet often this is not the case. Instead, sofas, loveseats, chairs, ottomans, and other upholstered pieces are left to accumulate the flotsam and jetsam or everyday life: dirt, dust, hair, fur, sloughed skin cells, pet dander, dust mites, food crumbs, body oils, etc. Vacuuming will remove some of the superficial residue, but a certain amount of pollutants inevitably penetrate through fibers to find their way to the base of the fabric. Overtime, this buildup will cause the fabric to lose its vibrancy, and can even cause unpleasant odors.

Steps in Upholstery Deep Cleaning Inspection

The first step that is taken by Upholstery Cleaning Newport Beach CA experts in upholstery deep cleaning is a thorough inspection. The purpose of this inspection is to determine upholstery fabric type so that the correct washing method will be used. In addition, the inspector identifies any areas that might require special treatment. Though professional upholstery cleaners prefer to use the extraction method, which is highly effective when it comes to spot removal, some stains may require pretreatment, or some other special treatment.

The next step by Upholstery Cleaning Newport Beach experts is to thoroughly vacuum every fiber – including the back, underside and pillows. When animals are present in a household, the cleaning crew of Pacific will often brush the fabric before they vacuum. These simple step helps loosen strands of hair or fur that have become entangled in fabric fibers. And the extra plus: we’re super animal friendly!

Upholstery cleaning is then carried out using the method most appropriate for the particular type of upholstery fabric. Options for upholstery fabrics cover an extensive range (cotton, wool, leather, plastic, vinyl, etc.). Some of these options respond will to the high heat, low moisture extraction method. Other fabrics, however, need more alternative treatments such as shampooing, dry cleaning or hand washing.

Extraction upholstery cleaning uses the pure cleaning power of steam to flush out dirt from fabric fibers and simultaneously whisk way all the moisture – and all the grime along with it – through watertight tubes to a holding tank. The most efficient machines are truck mounted machines, which keep all the heavy machinery out of your home. For smaller jobs, however, smaller machines may be used for similar results.

Individuals subjected to frequent allergy attacks may not know that planned visits from the carpet cleaning company significantly reduce the amount of bacteria and other allergens in their close environment.

With Pacific your home or place of business will be cleaned to perfection by chemical free carpet cleaning supplies and innovative upholstery cleaning machines.

Can my carpet be cleaned without chemicals?

More than ever, people are becoming aware of the potentially harmful effects of chemical use in the home. We have many clients who contact our office that are looking for a green carpet cleaning service. “Can you clean my carpet without chemicals?” is a question we are often asked.

Technically speaking, the only way to clean a carpet without chemicals is to just vacuum it. Even plain water is a chemical compound (H2O). However, what is usually meant when asked if we can clean your carpet without chemicals is, “can you clean my carpet safely?”

The short answer is, “Yes.” Your carpet cleaner should have a variety of products that are very safe to use.

For most clients, a reasonable solution to the issue would be to pre-treat your carpet with a standard mild carpet pre-spray and work it into the fibers like normal. The key step would be to rinse and extract the carpet with clean hot water. The hot water extraction rinse would remove virtually all the pre-treatment and leave very little residue in your carpet.

For other clients who are extremely sensitive, your carpet cleaner should have access to other products that are extremely safe. One major manufacturer produces an anti-allergen pre-spray that is hypo-allergenic, non-toxic and free of dyes, perfumes, solvents, VOCs, phosphates or other hazardous materials.

Additionally, it is derived from renewable seed and vegetable sources and is formulated to meet or exceed all established standards of wool fiber producers and fifth generation stain resistant carpet manufacturers.

There is also a rinsing agent that can be used that matches this pre-spray and meets the same stringent restrictions. Or, if you prefer, your carpet cleaner can simply rinse and extract the pre-treated carpeting with hot water, as mentioned previously.

It’s nice to know that most carpet cleaning products manufactured for use today are very safe for you and your family. A well trained, certified carpet cleaning technician will be able to meet your needs and provide a very high level of service, leaving you with clean, safe carpeting in your home.

Common carpet cleaning methods

Carpet cleaning professionals use a wide range of cleaning methods when tackling dirty rugs and carpets. Cost, degree of carpet soiling, environmental conditions and fiber type typically influence the selection of a carpet-cleaning method. Here are the benefits of the four most common professional carpet cleaning processes used today.

1. Steam cleaning. Also known as hot water extraction, steam cleaning is a common method of cleaning carpets. In this method, hot water is heated to boiling and injected into the carpet under pressure. The hot water effectively loosens the dirt, and the carpet-cleaning machine immediately draws moisture and dirt away. Heavily soiled carpet often requires the use of detergent. Steam cleaning is effective in removing odors and killing bacteria and dust mites. There are few drawbacks to this method, other than drying time.

2. Carpet shampooing. Carpet shampooing is the original carpet-cleaning method used by professional cleaners. In this process, a foamy chemical is distributed on the carpet and scrubbed in with a motorized circular brush. This method works best for heavily soiled, low-pile carpet. Since no extraction process is involved, the carpet must be thoroughly vacuumed to remove soil and residue. Many carpet-cleaning professionals recommend steam cleaning as more effective than carpet shampooing.

3. Carpet dry cleaning. The dry-cleaning method uses virtually no water. A technician sprinkles a small amount of an absorbent compound over the carpet and uses a mechanized brush to work it through the carpet, dissolving soil. The soil and residue are then drawn up by a commercial vacuum cleaner. The dry-cleaning method dries carpet more quickly than any other cleaning method. Easily damaged natural-fiber carpets, such as sisal and hemp, benefit from the dry-cleaning process.

4. Bonnet cleaning. Though this method of carpet cleaning is sometimes referred to as a dry-cleaning method, it really is not. Bonnet cleaning uses a cleaning product, occasionally mixed with carbonated water, and spreads it as a mist over the surface of the carpet. A circular rotating buffer or “bonnet” with an absorbent covering is run over the soiled area. When the covering becomes soiled, it is replaced with a clean one. While the top one-third of the carpet is cleaned, soil which has settled to the bottom of the pile remains behind. This cleaning method should be viewed as a temporary measure between more intensive cleanings.

How much should carpet cleaning cost?

Hiring a professional carpet cleaning service is a great way to deal with general wear and tear or to remove a particularly tough stain. Homeowners often wonder, however, what to expect for a carpet cleaning cost and how to know if they’re being overcharged.

The two common pricing types

Every carpet is different and every home a different size, which means there’s no “one size fits all” carpet cleaning price. There are, however, two common ways companies determine cost when you hire a carpet cleaner.

The first is “per room,” meaning they offer a flat cleaning rate for each room in a home. There are typically size caps on this method, and rooms over the maximum square footage are treated as two rooms. This lets companies offer quotes over the phone, but can artificially inflate the price to compensate for inaccuracy. It’s also important to consider just how low a rate may be: anything under $20 per room probably won’t come with quality service. Moving furniture is often an extra charge on top of this rate, meaning homeowners need to move couches, entertainment centers and other large objects if they want to keep costs down.

Angie’s List members who had similar jobs done in 2013 reported paying an average of $45.68 per room with a general range of $43.18 to $48.18, not counting discounts many service providers offer to Angie’s List members.

The other estimation method is per square foot. This is more accurate but requires a visit to your home before work can begin. If you own a smaller home, you will typically pay more because the company needs to offset travel and material costs; those with larger homes will pay slightly less per square foot because equipment set up and material requirements are fixed. Average rates run between $0.30 and $0.50 per square foot, and should include all labor, products and a guarantee about the standard of clean – for example, in compliance with the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) guidelines.

Different types, different costs

The type of carpet cleaning you choose also affects the cost. Hot water extraction cleaning, known as “steam cleaning,” is the most popular method. This kind of cleaning doesn’t actually use steam but instead uses high pressure to push very hot water, along with a cleaning solution, into carpet. The resulting moisture is then removed via suction, and the carpet needs at least 24 hours to fully dry. This is the method recommended by most carpet manufacturers for deep cleaning and is often required of homeowners to keep the warranty on their flooring valid. Companies may use either portable electric cleaners or vehicle-mounted equipment for more powerful suction.

Dry cleaning, also known as “low moisture” or “encapsulation” cleaning, uses a chemical solution and minimal water for a quicker clean, but can’t reach as deep as powerful wet cleaning methods. Homeowners don’t need to wait as long before walking on their carpet, but are often asked to vacate the home during cleaning to prevent accidental chemical inhalation. Dry cleaning typically costs less than wet cleaning, as it doesn’t require as much labor or equipment.

Considering extra costs

While most carpet cleaning services now offer an upfront fee that covers all basic costs, it’s still possible to incur some add-on costs. The first is for targeted spot cleaning: in some cases, a standard service won’t be able to remove a stain completely and will require further followup. This may be covered under an initial contract, but homeowners need to know exactly what they’re paying for and what requires an added cost. Many companies have also added extra services, such as color repair and dyeing, as well as dry and steam cleaning services. For a cost, typically assessed at an hourly rate, the company will correct carpet discolored by a stain or restore portions of a carpet to its original color. Always ask for references and guarantees if you choose to use this kind of service.

Carpet cleaning costs depend on the way a company determines rates, the type of cleaning requested and the number of add-ons purchased by a homeowner. No matter the final total, however, homeowners should always receive a transparent, easily understandable invoice detailing what they owe and exactly what it covers.

Carpet cleaning services: An overview of cleaning options

Schedule professional carpet cleaning services at least every year

When properly cleaned and maintained, a carpet goes a long way in trapping allergens and keeping them away from breathing zones. But if the carpet becomes too saturated with dirt and germs, these toxins can be released back into the air when unsettled by footsteps. The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) recommends that a carpet be professionally deep-cleaned at least every 12 to 18 months.

Different methods of carpet cleaning services

With the absorbent-pad approach, a machine like a floor buffer applies absorbent spinning pads to the carpet to remove dirt. In the dry-extraction method, the carpet is saturated with an absorbent compound consisting of detergents and solvents and vacuumed up after the compound has absorbed the grime. In the dry-foam cleaning method, a foam solution is applied to the carpet using a machine brush, then wet-vacuumed away. The final method involves steam cleaning, which applies chemical treatments and pressurized solutions into the carpet, followed by industrial-strength vacuuming. Before you and your cleaner agree on a specific cleaning method, check the manufacturer’s guidelines for cleaning and warranty. The manufacturer may require a specific method to keep the warranty intact. Many warranties require that the carpet be cleaned at least annually.

Consumers should be on the lookout for scams

As with many other trades, the carpet cleaning industry includes some unreputable companies, so consumers need to be cautious in hiring for the first time.  The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification, a nonprofit organization that sets standards and provides education and certification, warns that some carpet companies employ fraudulent tactics, such as bait-and-switch, amateur equipment and services and hard-sell tactics.

Before hiring, search  for carpet cleaners in your city and choose among those who have been given positive reviews from past customers.

Interview prospective candidates in your home so that they can give you a more accurate estimate. Before work commences, have a contract drawn up that states the price of the entire job, including all fees upfront so that there are no surprises later on. Make sure that prospective companies are properly insured in the event that a laborer injures himself or damages your property.

Questions to ask:

How long has the company been in business? Is the company IICRC certified? Does it use CRI Seal of Approval products? What are the basic service costs? How much do additional services cost? Do the cleaners offer a money-back guarantee? Do they have a truck-mounted hot water extraction system of at least 240° F? Ask the cleaners whether they move furniture during the cleaning process, as some companies consider this task too much of a liability issue.

Stinky carpet: Should you clean it or replace it?

When it comes to stinky carpet, should you clean it or replace it? Whether you just purchased a new home or witnessed your carpet go from new to not-so-new, how do you know if you should hire a professional carpet cleaner or replace the whole thing?

Here are some tips to help you decide:

Where’s the smell coming from?

First, figure out where the smell is coming from. Is it due to pet accidents, smoke, mildew, sweaty socks or something worse? If the smell is coming from the carpet padding, it may be hard to remove it. You can replace the padding and keep your current carpet (if it’s in good condition), but it might be more cost effective to replace the whole thing at once. If, instead, the smell hasn’t permeated the padding of the carpet, one professional cleaning should take care of the odor.

For more information: Please visit the Guide to Carpet Cleaning

Is it stained?

No carpet is stain-proof, even though many contain some sort of anti-stain treatment. Professional carpet cleaners should be able to remove most common stains, but in some cases no amount of cleaning will help your stained carpet. Stains such as teas, bleaches, plant fertilizers, and drain cleaners all pose cleaning challenges. If your carpet has stains from vomit, urine, feces or mildew, it may actually pose a health hazard. Consult with your professional carpet cleaner for advice on your particular stains.

How’s the wear and tear?

Is your carpet matted and worn down? Matting often marks the first sign that carpet is on its way out. If your carpet is made of polyester or similar substance, no amount of professional cleaning will undo the matting. Polyester fibers are not resilient and won’t return to their original position. However, you may be able to remedy the situation if your carpet is made of nylon. Nylon can regain a like-new appearance after being professionally cleaned. Issues like ripples, color loss, or worn-down padding cannot be reversed with a professional cleaning.

How old is the carpet?

Today’s carpets are designed to last about ten years. If your existing carpet is more than 10 years old, it might be near the end of its useful life. Spending hundreds of dollars on a professional carpet cleaning won’t bring your carpet back to life.

What’s your budget?

Lastly, consider your budget. A professional carpet cleaner typically charges between $0.30 and $0.50 per square foot, while a new carpet can range from about $2.75 to $3.00 installed. Consider your goals and lifestyle. If you have a large family or indoor pets, you might want to wait as long as possible to replace it. Also, if you plan to sell your home in the near future, you might want to hold off on replacing it – unless the old carpet will prevent you from receiving an offer, in which case, definitely replace it.

When it comes to stinky carpets, evaluate your options to see which would offer you the most value. If your carpet is relatively new and stain-free, then a professional carpet cleaning could restore your carpet to a like-new condition. If your carpet is worn out, stained and faded, you might be better off opting for new.
