Tile is beautiful, durable, and generally easy to clean, but cleaning grout? That’s a different story.

Because of its (typically) light coloring and porous composition, grout is prone to staining. In a tiled entry or mudroom, dirt and grime are the usual culprits, while in the kitchen, spills are more likely to blame. Soap, mold, and mildew meanwhile make it difficult to maintain clean grout in bathrooms. Fortunately, cleaning grout effectively is possible using only common household products and a bit of elbow grease.

With any cleaning project, it’s always best to start off with the mildest cleaning solution. When in doubt about a cleanser, test it in a hidden spot—behind or under an appliance, for example.

The following suggestions for cleaning grout are ranked from the mildest to the strongest:

• The best way to begin is with plain water and a stiff-bristled brush; most home centers and hardware stores carry an assortment of brushes specifically designed for this purpose. Simply spray warm water on the grout lines and scrub in a circular motion, then let dry.

• For heavier dirt and mild stains, turn to that trusty old standby, vinegar. Fill a spray bottle with a half-and-half solution of vinegar and warm water. Spray on the grout, let it stand for five minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush.

• To bring even more cleaning power to the party, make a paste of baking soda and water, cover the grout lines with the paste, then spray on the vinegar solution. Once the mixture stops foaming, scrub with a brush and rinse with plain water.

• For moderate stains, you may want to use hydrogen peroxide, which is available in most drug stores. You can use the product straight or make a paste with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

Cleaning Grout - Clorox Clean-Up

Clorox Clean-Up

• For tougher stains and really grimy grout, try using oxygen bleach (most often sold in powdered form). Some common brands include OxiClean, Clorex OxiMagic, and Biokleen Oxygen Bleach Plus. Read and follow the manufacturer’s directions, and make sure the area is well-ventilated. Generally, you will want to let the oxygen bleach solution work for 10 or 15 minutes before rinsing. Always rinse with clean water so that the dirt doesn’t resettle into the grout lines.

• Chlorine bleach and commercial cleansers can be used sparingly in extreme cases. One of my go-to products when all else fails is Clorox Clean-Up spray. Long-term use of caustic cleaners will erode grout, so these products should be used on a limited basis.

• Steam cleaners can be an effective and environmentally-friendly method of cleaning grout—or for that matter, many other surfaces around the house. Bissell, Oreck, Ladybug and Hoover all make steam cleaners for residential use.

To keep your grout clean and stain-free, it’s a good idea to spray it with vinegar and wipe it down once a week. You can also wipe grout with alcohol to keep mold and mildew at bay. In any case, just a few spritzes and wipes a week can save you a lot of time and effort cleaning, preserving the attractive appearance of your home in the process.

Tile Floor Cleaning Basics

Sweep or vacuum your glazed tile floors regularly to keep them from getting dull. Tiles may be resistant to dirt, but sand and grit can dull glazed surfaces. Clean tile with mild detergent and clean water, using a rag or chamois-type mop rather than a sponge mop. The latter pushes dirty water into grout lines and makes them harder to clean. Be sure to change the water frequently while mopping; dirty water equals a cloudy floor.

Get Rid of ResidueIf your tiles look hazy, you might be dealing with soapy residue. Remove the film with a nonabrasive all-purpose cleaner. You could also try a mild acid — such as fresh lemon juice — on ceramic tiles (but never on marble). Rinse thoroughly with clean water, and buff dry with a clean lint-free cloth. Be kind to your knees and dry tiles the easy way: by using your foot to slide the cloth over the floor.

Great-Looking Grout

The real secret to a great-looking tile floor is clean grout. Grout is porous and absorbs grease and other stains. Skip commercial cleaners and instead make a paste of baking soda and water. Rub it on the stain, let it sit overnight, then scrub the stain in the morning with a stiff nylon brush (a metal brush will damage the grout). Repeat as necessary. Apply a silicone-base sealer to the grout to repel future stains.

Q: DEAR TIM: Cleaning a tile floor is my next big project. The grout lines are filthy, and I haven’t discovered an easy way to restore the tile. Is there a magic product that will clean floor tile? Once the grout is clean, what’s the easiest way to keep it that way? Should I invest in a cleaning machine? — Michelle S., Corvallis, Ore.

A: DEAR MICHELLE: We had a boatload of tile floors in our last home, and cleaning them was a nightmare. To make it worse, we had brilliant white tile with light gray grout in our kitchen and breakfast area. I knew when I was installing it that it was going to be a challenge to keep it clean. Add to the mix three small kids, and soon the grout around the refrigerator, stove and kitchen sink was nearly black.

It took me years to discover how to clean tile floors in a way that was easy and that didn’t harm my family, pets and the colored grout. I finally settled on using powdered oxygen bleach. Little did I know that this choice would put me way ahead of the current green movement.

Oxygen bleach is nontoxic, doesn’t produce harsh fumes, and is color- and fabric-safe. It removes all food and grease stains with no or minimal scrubbing. The oxygen ions attack the stain molecules, breaking them into pieces that rinse away with little effort.

To clean floor tiles, mix any high-quality oxygen bleach with warm water and stir it until it dissolves. Then pour the solution onto the floor tile so the grout lines are flooded with the solution. It’s best to apply the oxygen-bleach solution to dry grout so it soaks deeply. Let the solution sit on the grout for at least 15 minutes. If it completely soaks into the grout, add more solution, making sure there is always plenty of the cleaning liquid on the grout.

The longer you let the solution sit on the grout, the less work you have to do cleaning tile flooring. The oxygen ions work for up to six hours. To get maximum cleaning results, it helps to scrub the grout lightly after 30 minutes. Always pour new solution onto the grout as you scrub.

An oxygen bleach solution will remove red wine stains in minutes. Beet juice is not a problem. I’ve not discovered one stain it can’t remove. Friends have tried the tile cleaning machines, but they say the oxygen bleach does a much better job. You have to always scrub a little, but that’s how anything gets clean.

Once you have clean floor tiles, you can keep the grout looking like new by adding oxygen bleach powder to your mop water. Apply a liberal amount of mop water to the floor, scrubbing the tile surface with the mop. But leave the mop water in the grout joints without rinsing the floor. The oxygen ions clean the light dirt in the grout without scrubbing. Come back 30 minutes later and rinse the floor with clean water. If you do this each time, you’ll never be on your hands and knees again with a scrub brush.

It’s always best to work on stains while they’re fresh, if at all possible. But tile floors that have been dirty for years will come clean in no time if you use oxygen bleach.

Limestone Polishing in Newport Beach CA

imageimage

Limestone Polishing in Newport Beach CA

Does it seem like no matter how much you dust mop and wet mop, your travertine, limestone and marble floor still does not look like it used to? It may be time for a 5 step honing, polishing and sealing. While there are available do-it-yourself cleaning methods in the market, it is still best to hire a professional limestone natural stone polishing company in Newport Beach to do the task. Why? Because honing, polishing limestone and sealing requires skills and experience plus the right use of cleaning materials.

Are you not sure what to look for when hiring a professional limestone polishing company in Newport Beach CA? We have some tips which will help you get started.

Choosing a professional limestone polisher

You can select through referrals from families and friends and endorsement from them can provide great peace of mind. Their experiences with a professional limestone polishing company in Newport Beach CA, will help you in choosing. You may also request references from the limestone polishing company. A reputable cleaning professional should have available a list of satisfied clients who used their services.

Interviewing the company

When you have identified one or two limestone polishing companies, the next step is to interview each of them. You have to ask them  how  long  the company  has been in business,  what formal  training  do they require for  the company’s management and technicians, what are the basic services offered  and what constitutes an extra charge,  and what type of diamond polishing method will be used. These questions should be answered consistently. The years of service can speak volumes about its reputation and experience. A professional company should require that its employees receive training and certification from recognized organizations and participate in continuing education programs. Information on actual charges and services will be helpful since this determines the budget you will prepare before hiring a professional travertine, limestone polishing company.

Request an initial assessment

Remember, before hiring a limestone polishing company, have a technician come to your home and inspect the marble floor.  You need to discuss in details the exact services that are needed in polishing your marble stone.  Do not accept quotes over the phone. Require a written agreement for all services to be performed and beware of pricing that is “too good to be true”. Professionals should charge only for services that are in writing before cleaning begins.

5 tips for upholstery cleaning

If you want to clean your upholstery, you face a variety of options in cleaning methods and products. If you’re not likely to use your own upholstery-cleaning equipment and products at least twice a year, it’s probably a better value to rent equipment or hire a professional. Here’s what to know:

Tags

To find out whether renting or purchasing a steam cleaner is your best option, always check your upholstery tags. Here’s an explanation of what the tag codes mean:

W: Use a water-based detergent.

S: Use a water-free product.

WS: You can use either a water-based cleaner or a water-free cleaner, depending on the type of stain.

X: This upholstery fabric must be professionally cleaned.

Even after you’ve checked upholstery tags, always test a small area of fabric before applying any type of cleanser to the entire piece of furniture.

Stain types

Steam upholstery cleaners work well for stains from organic materials such as dirt, urine, wine and coffee. Though stubborn stains will require repeated cleaning, steam cleaning is effective for theses types of stains. Any others may require specific chemical-based cleaners.

Equipment

When it comes to choosing upholstery cleaning equipment, consider ease of use. Some machines are heavy and require considerable physical effort, but lightweight options are also available. Along with the weight of the machine, review the attachments; many newer machines are fitted with a number of special attachments designed to make cleaning easier.

Cleanser

Be aware of what type of cleanser each machine uses. You may need several bottles for bigger jobs, and some brands can be  expensive, around $200 to $500. Some renters of upholstery cleaning machines will insist their machines only work with (and that you purchase), their own brand of cleaner; others will recommend generic or even homemade cleaning products.

So it’s helpful to note how expensive the cleanser for a particular machine is, and how easy it is to obtain, before you rent or purchase. Consider a non-toxic cleanser if you have allergies or asthma, and especially if there are pets or children in your household.

Cleaning methods

Two factors that determine the best choice of upholstery-cleaning machine are upholstery type and the type of stain you most frequently encounter. While steam cleaning is appropriate for most synthetic fibers, natural materials like leather and suede require a dry-cleaning process with a water-free cleanser. Applying water to these natural fabrics may cause them to shrink.

DIY upholstery cleaning

Upholstery cleaning is expensive. A professional sofa cleaning costs about $100, while chairs can cost about $50 each — additional fees may be charged for each cushion. Given that all upholstered furniture should be cleaned every 12 months, it can get pricey to keep your upholstered pieces fresh and free of stains.

You might want to consider cleaning upholstery yourself. It’s not difficult, and most upholstery can be safely cleaned at home. Check your upholstery tags for cleaning codes. They are usually found under the seat cushions on one side of the furniture.

Upholstery tags that read “W” or “WS” can be cleaned at home with a water-based cleaner. Upholstery tags labeled “S” must be cleaned with a water-free dry cleaning solution. Because dry cleaning solvents contain toxic chemicals, it’s best to have “S” rated upholstery cleaned professionally. Upholstery labeled “X” should also be cleaned by a professional.

It’s not a good idea to wait too long between upholstery cleanings. The more dirt that accumulates on the fabric, the harder it is to remove, the more damage it does to the texture, and the more difficult it is to restore upholstery to its original color and appearance.

Before cleaning upholstery

Being careful to clean uphostery properly is a critical element to execute a job well-done. Follow these steps to ensure success before tidying up your furniture:

1. Remove furniture cushions2. Vacuum all surfaces thoroughly with an upholstery attachment3. Be sure to vacuum all the nooks and cranniesOne of the best water based upholstery cleaners is very easy to make at home. Put one cup of warm (not hot) water into a mixing bowl and then add 1/4 cup of biodegradable dish washing soap. Beat with an electric mixer at medium speed until the liquid becomes a thick foam. This foam will remove built up dirt and most food or drink stains. Not only is this cleaner simple to make and cheap to use, it’s also nontoxic and environmentally-friendly. Most commercial upholstery cleaners contain hazardous ingredients like acetone or carcinogenic agents like nitrilotriacetic acid.

The cleaning process

Though cleaning upholstery can by a DIY project, a professional will have the right products and tools to make sure nothing is damaged in the process. (Photo courtesy of Gina Infante)

Once your ready to take on cleaning, implement this process to keep your task on track:

1. Test the cleaner in an inconspicuous area for shrinkage and colorfastness2. Use a soft-bristled brush to rub foam gently onto the fabric3. Dirt will lift out of the upholstery fabric and into the foam4. Remove used foam with a spatula5. Dampen a clean white cloth with fresh water and wipe away the remaining suds6. Rinse the cloth and wipe againTake care to use a minimal amount of water. Too much moisture can leave water stains and cause fabric shrinkage. Keep the foam away from wood surfaces such as armrests and steer clear of recliner levers to prevent rust. This process can be used on individual stains or on an entire upholstered surface. If you clean the entire surface, be sure to let it dry completely before replacing the cushions and pillows or sitting on it.

Leather upholstery is even easier to clean because you don’t have to wait for it to dry. Make your own leather cleaner by adding a few drops of moisturizing soap to a slightly damp washcloth. Gently wipe off a section of the leather upholstery, use another slightly damp washcloth to remove the soap, then buff with a dry washcloth. Repeat this process over the entire upholstered area.In between cleanings, vacuum upholstery thoroughly every two weeks and treat stains immediately. If spills are wet, blot the moisture first with paper towels and then spot-treat with a cleaner. If the spill involves solids such as food, scoop it off with a spatula and then treat with a stain-remover. Avoid rubbing staining agents into the upholstery. The water-based cleaner suggested above will lift stains out instead.

Why hire?

The chief reason you would hire a professional upholstery cleaner is that there are many stains you can’t remove yourself. Most furniture is upholstered with specific fabrics that do not respond well to normal cleaning methods. Special chemicals are needed to clean this upholstery, chemicals that most homeowners do not possess. Professional upholstery cleaners have expertise in using these chemicals to clean all kinds of furniture.Furthermore, the unique shapes of upholstered furniture call for special tools to clean all the nooks and crannies found on most furniture. It’s not cost effective for most homeowners to buy these tools. It is far more efficient to hire a professional upholstery cleaner instead.Cleaning companies will come to your home and clean the furniture wherever it is located. In rare circumstances, a professional upholstery cleaner may have to take your furniture to another location for a special cleaning. This will only happen in the case that the furniture is particularly soiled or when it is made from an extremely unusual fabric. Most of the chemicals that professional upholstery cleaners use are similar to the chemicals used in the dry cleaning of clothes. As a rule, these chemicals are generally safe for people and animals once they have dried. At the same time, however, they can cause respiratory issues, so it is important for upholstery cleaning to always take place in a well-ventilated area. The most dangerous upholstery cleaning chemicals are those chemicals that contain volatile organic compounds. These chemicals are still safe once they have dried, but they can lead to respiratory problems if they are inhaled. To prevent these difficulties, make sure to ventilate well the room in which the furniture is cleaned. Those who are particularly concerned about these chemicals can hire a professional upholstery cleaner that uses chemicals with low levels of volatile organic compounds. There are also many professional upholstery cleaners that use green chemicals, which are chemicals that are not harmful to people, animals or the natural environment.

Upholstery Cleaning Newport Beach

Residents of Newport Beach, California! For any carpet and upholstery cleaning related task, you are welcome to contact Upholstery Cleaning Orange County.

For most people, buying upholstery is a time consuming process that entails making a string of decisions concerning issues such as color, fabric, and style. In addition, budgetary considerations also come into play. It makes sense that once a decision has been made, you want it to be the right one, and you want to keep the furniture in use as long as possible. The best way to ensure that your upholstered pieces service you for as long as possible is to take proper care of them. This means weekly brushing and vacuuming and deep cleaning once every two to three years.

Deep Cleaning

Deep cleaning upholstery is an essential element in upholstery care. For best results, upholstery should be deep cleaned at regular intervals, yet often this is not the case. Instead, sofas, loveseats, chairs, ottomans, and other upholstered pieces are left to accumulate the flotsam and jetsam or everyday life: dirt, dust, hair, fur, sloughed skin cells, pet dander, dust mites, food crumbs, body oils, etc. Vacuuming will remove some of the superficial residue, but a certain amount of pollutants inevitably penetrate through fibers to find their way to the base of the fabric. Overtime, this buildup will cause the fabric to lose its vibrancy, and can even cause unpleasant odors.

Steps in Upholstery Deep Cleaning Inspection

The first step that is taken by Upholstery Cleaning Newport Beach CA experts in upholstery deep cleaning is a thorough inspection. The purpose of this inspection is to determine upholstery fabric type so that the correct washing method will be used. In addition, the inspector identifies any areas that might require special treatment. Though professional upholstery cleaners prefer to use the extraction method, which is highly effective when it comes to spot removal, some stains may require pretreatment, or some other special treatment.

The next step by Upholstery Cleaning Newport Beach experts is to thoroughly vacuum every fiber – including the back, underside and pillows. When animals are present in a household, the cleaning crew of Pacific will often brush the fabric before they vacuum. These simple step helps loosen strands of hair or fur that have become entangled in fabric fibers. And the extra plus: we’re super animal friendly!

Upholstery cleaning is then carried out using the method most appropriate for the particular type of upholstery fabric. Options for upholstery fabrics cover an extensive range (cotton, wool, leather, plastic, vinyl, etc.). Some of these options respond will to the high heat, low moisture extraction method. Other fabrics, however, need more alternative treatments such as shampooing, dry cleaning or hand washing.

Extraction upholstery cleaning uses the pure cleaning power of steam to flush out dirt from fabric fibers and simultaneously whisk way all the moisture – and all the grime along with it – through watertight tubes to a holding tank. The most efficient machines are truck mounted machines, which keep all the heavy machinery out of your home. For smaller jobs, however, smaller machines may be used for similar results.

Individuals subjected to frequent allergy attacks may not know that planned visits from the carpet cleaning company significantly reduce the amount of bacteria and other allergens in their close environment.

With Pacific your home or place of business will be cleaned to perfection by chemical free carpet cleaning supplies and innovative upholstery cleaning machines.
